Church of the week- The Redeemed Christian Church Of God (RCCG)
The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) is a Pentecostal megachurch and denomination founded in Lagos, Nigeria. The General overseer is Enoch Adeboye, ordained in 1981.
RCCG was founded in 1952 by Rev. Josiah Olufemi Akindayomi (1909–1980) after he had been involved in a number of other churches. Rev. Akindayomi started a house fellowship in Ebutte-Metta, Lagos, called the Glory of God Fellowship with nine initial members.
Rev. Akindayomi, upon God’s instructions, chose Enoch Adeboye as the next General overseer. Enoch Adeboye was a lecturer in mathematics at the University of Lagos, Nigeria, as at the time he joined the church in 1973. Adeboye initially became one of the interpreters translating Akindayomi’s sermons from Yoruba to English. He was ordained a pastor of the church in 1975, and his appointment as leader(General overseer) of the church was formalized by the posthumous reading of Akindayomi’s sealed pronouncement.
The church continued to meet at 9 Willoughby Street until they were able to acquire some land thereby witnessing a relocation to the present site of the Headquarters of the church at 1-5 Redemption Way, Ebute-Metta suburb of Lagos, Nigeria. (formerly 1a, Cemetery Street). RCCG had a presence in 189 nations of the world, and the church is still rapidly expanding, utilizing evangelism as a core tool along with church planting.
A major RCCG evangelistic outreach event is the “Let’s go fishing” program, which holds primarily during the major Christian festive seasons of Christmas and Easter. They are typically held at previously unevangelized communities.
Today, God is still doing marvelous deeds through the Redeemed Christian Church of God, worldwide. One of the well-known programs of the church is the Holy Ghost Service, an all night miracle service that holds on the first Friday of every month at the Redemption Camp at Km. 46, Lagos-Ibadan expressway. The average headcount of those who attend the Service is about 500,000. The Holy Ghost Service now holds in different parts of the world which includes the United Kingdom, India, USA, Canada, South Africa, Australia, Dubai, Ghana, Philiphines and many more.
In 1990, Redeemed Christian Church of God Bible School is founded. The RCCG runs bible colleges and school of disciples headquartered in Nigeria, with many campuses in the UK, Europe, Middle East (Qatar) and a few other continents.
