Church denominations around us today numbers up to thousands with several names ranging from the hilarious ones to the very absurd names. This makes the situation look very disturbing and chaotic as there have been reports of entrepreneurs starting a church and ’employ’ a pastor to make money. You might want to ask: shouldn’t there be a way control the rate at which new churches spring up?

Well, at the beginning, it was not like that. Nobody had the right to start up a church except authorized by the church which was the Catholic Church. Luther’s believe was refuted by the Catholic church, but his persistence led to a whole new movement called the Protestant Reformation. This gave birth to denominations among which is the Anglican Church.
After that incident, every “new” revelation led to a new denomination. This is the case with Methodist Church and The Assemblies of God Church. In the early days of Christianity in Nigeria, denominations helped in spreading the gospel, but just like it happened in the days of Martin Luther, traditions has caused several break away from these early churches.

However, there are several denominations that started with the sole aim of fame and money. Church is not a franchise, but a system of equipping the body of Christ. The many denominations we have in Nigeria is not wrong if they all started rightly and their focus is Christ. Some simply wants to establish their own doctrine while many are established by the Lord. Keep praying for the Church!
